Dental Restoration Looks Amazing With Dental Crowns

Dental Crowns

You’ve no doubt heard of dental crowns before, but are you familiar with how much these customized caps can improve the look and functionality of your smile? If you have teeth that are moderately to severely damaged or decayed, you may want to consider dental crowns in Charlotte from our dentist, Robert A. Lowe, DDS.

What are Dental Crowns?

But what exactly are dental crowns? Essentially, crowns are prosthetic teeth that are cemented in place over damaged teeth to prevent further trauma or decay and to give you back your attractive, natural-looking smile. They are most commonly used after root canals, trauma, or in cases where a tooth has lost a great deal of mass to decay.

What Can You Expect Before, During, and After the Procedure?

The process leading up to the need for dental crowns varies a great deal, depending on the reason for installing them. If a tooth is significantly decayed and the inner pulp is infected, a root canal will be necessary before a crown can be put in place. In some cases, if trauma is fresh, decay has not set in, and the pulp of the tooth is not exposed, no root canal will be necessary and we may go directly to taking impressions and preparing the tooth for a dental crown.

During preparation, we will first take an impression of your teeth and your bite in the affected area. We will then numb the area and file and shave down the tooth to prepare it to anchor the crown. Once this is complete, we will take another impression of the newly filed tooth. We will send both impressions to a laboratory, where your crown will be made to fit with your bite and on the anchor tooth.

Before you leave your preparation appointment, we will install a temporary crown to avoid further damage or infection. When you come back for installation, we will put your permanent crown in place and perform any necessary reshaping to ensure that your bite is even and natural. If you leave and find later that your crown is sitting too high or your bite feels uncomfortable, simply give us a call at our Charlotte dental office, and we will be happy to further adjust it for you.
